Did you know ???

Did you know that over the past few years that Haywood Community College (Natural Resources and Arts and Sciences) has received over $300,000 in BioNetwork grants. Biotechnology applications are fast becoming another important scientific tool in Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, and Horticulture. If you are familiar with campus you may have seen the modern Biotechnology Teaching Laboratory. This laboratory was paid for in large part with BioNetwork grants awarded to HCC. BioNetwork grant funds are made possible through Golden LEAF.

This past year you may have also seen Dr. Sherman and two technicians after hours testing plant tissue culture protocols that will be made available to all North Carolina Community College instructors through a database and website. This particular project was a collaboration between Wilkes Community College, Mayland Community College, Southeastern Community College and HCC.

In another project directed by Steven Heulett several high quality videos demonstrating Biotechnology protocols were produced. Watch the YouTube selection below to see the DNA Extraction Video produced as part of this project.

Think you might be interested in getting more in depth on the subject and trying out some of these techniques with your own hands? Dr. John Sherman is offering BIO-280 Biotechnology this fall.
