What Are Plants Worth?

HCC Horticulture Student Install plants in local landscape.

According to the June issue of Money Magazine, high quality landscaping can add 5 to 11% to the price of a home, depending on where it's located. That number comes from a Michigan State study funded by the Horticulture Research Institute.

The article was written using sources provided by the American Nursery & Landscape Association, and it promoted the idea that "landscaping adds more value than almost any other home renovation." It also advised homeowners that even if they aren't planning a move right away, "landscaping is the one home improvement that actually appreciates over time." Other recommendations include investing in larger-sized, unique material for a more significant impact, as well as annual color plantings and lawn fertilizing and maintenance.
