Woodsmen Team Slings the Sawdust at "Rolleo"

The HCC Lumberjacks returned from Roxboro this weekend chalking up their second win of the year against NC State and Virginia Tech's forestry conclave teams at Rolleo--an annual friendly woodsmen meet hosted by NC State. Students participated in a number of traditional forestry academic and physical events at the historic Hill Forest, just north of Durham. Freshman Jarrett Guffey prepares to start the cut in the Jack and Jill Crosscut event.
In the academic events, Fish and Wildlife Management students Erin Bellavia and Max Cox finished 1st in the wildlife competition, and Forestry student Preston Honeycutt finished 1st in tree diameter estimation. Haywood came out on top in most of the physical events and brought home a stack of trophy 'cookies'. The open format of the competition allowed any teammember the opportunity to chop, saw, throw an axe, or roll lumber--so everyone who came got plenty of practice. The event concluded with a skeet shoot and home-cooked barbecue courtesy of NC State's Forestry Club.

More details, event results, and pictures will be posted soon on the HCC Forestry Club blog @
