Forest Pesticides Class Heads to Christmas Tree Country

Sophomore students in HCC's Forest Pesticides class donned backpack sprayers to learn the finer points of calibration for weed suppression on a recent field visit to Avery County. The county's IPM Technician, Doug Hundley, introduced the class to "chemical mowing" using ultra low rates of glyphosate (RoundUp)--a practice being adopted by many Fraser fir Christmas tree growers in western NC to provide weed control while promoting clover establishment (and saving money!). Mr. Hundley and Avery County grower, Wilbur Horney, also discussed other pesticides commonly used in the industry and other pest issues associated with commercial Fraser fir production.
