'Lumberjacking' at the Fairgrounds

HCC's Forestry Club and Lumberjack team put on a show for Haywood County elementary schoolers at the county fairgrounds on Friday. Club members wore their traditional lumberjack "team uniforms"--hickory shirts and red suspenders--and spoke to around 300 kids throughout the morning as class groups rotated through various stops at the fair. The team demonstrated crosscut sawing, axe-throw, and chopping and gave a history lesson on traditional forestry and lumberjacking. Axe-throwing was a major hit with the kids--and our team-members did not disappoint with several bullseyes made under pressure! The woodsmen's team is gearing up for the October 4 Intercollegiate Woodsmen's Meet against rivals Montgomery Community College, Penn State Mont Alto, and NC State to be held at the Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard.
