HCC Lumberjacks Finish 2nd in Mid-Atlantic Nail-Biter

Beautiful weather and exciting competition graced the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Woodsmens meet held at Allegany College. The HCC Lumberjacks made the 9 hour trek to western Maryland and came very close to ousting the reigning Mid-Atlantic champions, Penn State Mont Alto. HCC Freshman Daniel Jones placed a solid second in the STIHL Mid Atlantic Collegiate Challenge posting amazing times in the four STIHL events. His performance in the standing block chop even impressed STIHL pro, Mike Slingerland, who congratulated Daniel on his performance.

After a leader board that went back and forth between Haywood and Penn State, Haywood finished seven points shy of the overall victory. Haywood picked up first place in men's and women's axe throw. Sarah Miller dominated the event. Her 11 out of 15 score topped every axe thrower at the competition. Sarah also finished 2nd in the women's horizontal speed-chop competition. The HCC log roll team of Frank Potts, Jeremy Graves, Rance Rogers, and Dawn Salley also finished on top. Bill Sweeney took second place in dendrology while Rance Rogers and Leslie Boyd finished first in the bolt split and "throw-bag" competition respectively. Pictures from the event are below, and more videos of individual events can be found HERE.
