Hands-on learning about fisheries management...

The Fishery Management class was able to gain invaluable experience with fish population assessment techniques used in lake environments, thanks to a special partnership between natural resources faculty at Haywood Community College, Lake Junaluska staff, and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission area fisheries staff. Haywood Community College is working with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to collect data on a portion of the fish population for the community at Lake Junaluska, while providing students hands-on learning opportunities during Fishery Management lab. Experiential opportunities included basic motorboat operation, gill netting, trap netting, fish identification and measurements, and pulling otoliths for aging. Special thanks to Mr. Buddy Young at Lake Junaluska, and especially Powell Wheeler and his incredible staff with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission!
