HCC to Host Free Green Business Expo/ Earth Day Celebration

On Thursday, April 22, Haywood Community College will host its annual Green Business Expo/ Earth Day Celebration in the Student Center Building, first floor. This expo will focus on the growing field of green businesses and provide information and networking opportunities for both students and the general public.

The expo will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Many key players in this broad and popular field will be staffing booths and answering questions in their respective fields.

Areas include: HCC’s Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Programs, Green Lending (Self-Help Credit Union), Western North Carolina Green Building Council, Green Building Construction Jobs, Photovoltaic’s (Crawford Creek Electric and Atomic Solar), Haywood Waterways, Champion Supply, Progress Energy’s Twist and Save, Haywood Builders Supply, WNC Go Green, Haywood County Alliance, Elk Bugle Corps Outreach, Haywood County Library, HCC’s Recyclemania, Haywood Chamber’s Green Initiative, NC Forest Service, Friends of the Smokies, Land-of-Sky Regional Council, and NC Natural Products Association.

A feature documentary, King Corn, will be shown throughout the day. In King Corn, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm.

A clean vehicle exhibit with electric and hybrid vehicles and a biodiesel demonstration will be ongoing throughout the day.

This event is co-sponsored by the College’s Small Business Center, Student Government Association and the HCC Foundation. There is no fee for attendance. For more information, please call Kathy Brooks at (828) 565-4021.
