LID 112 Students tour Lake Junaluska and Stuart Circle with Buddy Young, Lake Junaluska Director of Residential Services

Instructor Tamara Graham and LID 112 students Vicki Eastland, Candace Stimson, Murphy Brown, Steven Payne and Charles Walker toured Lake Junaluska by boat on a glorious October fall day. Boat captain Buddy Young, also the Director of Residential Services for Lake Junaluska, led students on the tour along with Janet Manning, Horticulture Director of the Corneille Bryan Native Plant Garden. From the perspective of the water, LID students learned about the impact of stormwater runoff, particularly erosion, on the shoreline of the lake and the community's ongoing efforts to mitigate disturbance through measures such as establishing riparian vegetation on the banks. Students then toured the site of a proposed rain garden in the historic Stuart Circle neighborhood of Lake Junaluska which is adjacent to the Bryan Native Plant Gardens. As part of their LID 112 class, student will be working with the Lake Junaluska community on plans to enhance the stream bank and infiltrate stormwater runoff closer to its source to help alleviate problems such as erosion experienced downstream.
