Forestry Field Tour of the NC Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain



HCC Sophomore Forest Management Technology students recently returned from a forestry field tour of the lower piedmont and upper coastal plain of North Carolina.
Stops included:
• A tour of the North Carolina Forest Service’s, Caldridge Nursery, to discuss nursery operation and NCDFR tree improvement programs.

• Campus tour of the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University by Forestry Department Chair, Dr. Barry Goldfarb.

• Tour of the Hill Forest with Mr. Joe Cox, NCSU Forest Manager, to view and discuss silviculture practices and forest management techniques used in the piedmont and upper coastal plain.

• Tour of Bolin Brook Farm with Consulting Forester Jerry Gaertner RF# 673. Mr. Gaertner discussed forest management on both private and conservancy lands.

• Tour of the Duke Forest with Mr. Michael Burke (HCC Forest Management Alumni Class of 1984). Students were shown several forest research projects including a Department of Energy carbon sequestration study investigating the effects of additional CO2 levels on forests.
