Daniel Jones is the 2011 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Champion

Walt Page set the mark in the single buck, and Daniel Jones blew it away. Page, of Cal Poly, knew he had his work cut out for him coming into the single buck, the fourth and final event of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship presented by Ram Trucks.
Page’s time of 16.87 seconds held up through the first two heats, but it also sat there as a mark Daniel Jones knew he needed to beat to win the championship.

And he did more than just beat it. Jones put up “the fastest time of my life”, severing the 19-inch log in 13.973 seconds. That time would have been good enough for eighth place in yesterday’s pro finals, beating lumberjack legends Mike Sullivan, Mel Lentz and David Bolstad, among others.

Jones’ family and friends rooted him on from the stands wearing neon shirts that read “Daniel ‘Deacon’ Jones”, with his high-school football number, 58, on the back. “I’m a real proud daddy right now,” Danny Jones, Daniel’s father, said after the event.
Jones wins a spot in the 2011 pro series and a handful of other prizes. He said he plans on competing on the pro circuit next year.

The final standings:
Daniel Jones 22
Walt Page 18
Tim Benedict 14
Scooter Cogar 11
Andrew Gollnick 9
Schuyler VanAuken 9
