Doan Ogden Field Tour

HCC Horticulture Students toured the grounds of WNC Landscape Architect Doan Ogden’s former Asheville home as part of a field trip for HOR 213 (Landscape Design II). Ogden developed the original Master Plan for Haywood Community College in the late 60s and subsequently the plans for the campus’ Rhododendron Garden in the mid-1980s. John Cram, owner of the New Morning Gallery and Blue Spiral Gallery in Asheville and the current owner and dedicated steward of the property, has lived at the home for the past 20 years. Mr. Cram led us on a tour of the magical gardens that he has both conserved and carefully cultivated over the two decades that they have been in his care, honoring Ogden’s original design intent while simultaneously making the garden his own with new plantings, furnishings, site features and stunning sculptures. We were able to enjoy this delightful garden and its spectacular display of early spring ephemerals before being caught in a downpour (Tamara Graham, Low Impact Development).
